Exercising? Don’t think about it too hard!

There is a positive link between exercising and meditation. People who exercise regularly are able to find their tune out track they begin to focus on the small steps, gain the confidence to see the bigger picture and forget about their stressors. This is the zone experienced by athletes who can focus to the extent of pushing their everyday problems aside to pursue their sport at the highest performance levels. It is not easy to reach this calm level of focus, but with a little practice anyone can meditate to personal fulfillment and calming peace on a daily basis.

Meditating is any behavior where the person is able to enjoy a calm state of mind and focus on living life in the present tense. Anyone can meditate! It is free and you can do it at any time. Staring at your cubicle wall during the work day could be meditating. If you are procrastinating and not doing your work, it is just being lazy. But if you stare ahead quietly to center yourself and find balance in the middle of a stressful routine – we’d agree that you were actually meditating.

If you meditate during exercise there is a high likelihood that you will exercise longer and focus more on the task at hand. For example, if you set your exercise bike near a window, and are able to stare out the window, you will not notice the passage of time. When meditating during regular exercise it is possible to experience the status of the body, paying attention to pain during the workout, clear your mind and truly live in the now.

Consider doing a meditating walk in San Antonio’s River Walk Museum Reach Out & Back at the River Walk. You’ll enjoy the River Walk and will traverse the over one mile course to the Pearl Brewery complex. The new area of the Museum Reach features native landscaping and a cool public art display. This is one walk not to be missed. When walking, enjoy the open air, the scenery and focus on the beauty of the area while letting go of your problems for a few minutes. By living in the present, it is possible to enjoy your life in the process. Trust us, the problems of tomorrow will usually take care of themselves, enjoy today instead for a healthier lifestyle in general.

Watching you energizes me – and your experience?

Do you watch others at the gym? For anyone who regularly frequents the gym, you know that there are many unspoken rules as to how to behave – as in where to keep your eyes – while you are working out. Some people are able to be motivated to stay on course just because of the experience of being in the gym with others. It turns out that studies show that working out with others at the gym is a natural motivator and the act of watching others can be a tool to use to stay motivated when exercising regularly for life.

When we see others working out at the gym or even running outside for a jog, we secretly have a feeling sometimes of longing to join the person or do the same exercise. How many times have you been in your car on the way to a meeting and seen a jogger running at a comfortable and determined pace, and you wished it could be you? The good news is that it can be you, and instead of feeling jealous, you can feel inspired to do the same.

What is stopping us from working out? Most people say they have no extra time at the end of the day and are not able to fit in a workout because of prior commitments to family and their jobs. But it is possible to fit in a work out on a daily basis we just have to think about the work out in different terms. For example, everyone brushes teeth, takes a shower or prepares a meal. If you took the time to do a short workout before or after an essential daily routine, such as brushing our teeth, you would be shocked at the time you could make for a work out.

To test this theory, we studied a dozen people who agreed to do an exercise each time they brushed their teeth at the end of the day (the time before bed was perfect). We offered that they noted an exercise that they would agree to do each time they brushed their teeth in the evening. The exercises were leg lifts, leg stretches, squats or ballet stretches and the subjects studied could pick one exercise or a combination of these to do while brushing their teeth. The results of the study were that the subjects were able to fit in at least 10 to 15 minutes of leg exercises while brushing their teeth daily. They even were motivated to add the exercise routine to the morning brushing of teeth, which added another 10-15 minutes of exercise to their day.

A few people noted that they were able to add more leg stretches while doing the dishes in the morning and in the evening for an additional 15-20. All totaled, the study participants were able to add 10 minutes to morning brushing of teeth, 10 minutes for evening brushing, 15 minutes for morning washing dishes and 15 minutes for evening dish washing for a grand total of (15+15+10+10= 50) 50-60 minutes of leg stretching per day.

In a follow up experiment, these same subjects were advised to walk in place or perform a different type of exercise during any of the previously mentioned time slots – for a total of 60 minutes per day. Most participant were actually able to capture 60 minutes for 7 days a week, doing their regularly scheduled brushing of teeth or washing dishes in the sink. If this sounds amazing, it should be a great motivator for anyone who thinks it is impossible to “schedule” workout time into the daily routine!

When you are ready to get out and put these short burst workouts to the test, check out the Downtown and Southtown Route walking trail in San Antonio. The route starts nearby the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, goes past the Alamo and goes through the Southtown and King William Historic District. Exercise Psychology: Friend or Foe?

The theory of exercise psychology works to review and focus on the general population and determine their views regarding exercise in a behavioral and motivational context. Studies show that more people exercise for the affirmative health benefits in every age group. This includes men, women, young and elderly, at all class and life stations – they all value exercise for the positive health benefits. But do men and women value exercise in the exact same way? Men often exercise as a way to bulk up their muscles and to compete against other men. Women want to experience the health benefits and control their weight for life. The support of family and friends is noted, but neither men nor women work out for pure enjoyment. The women studied who have poor self-esteem or have an unrealistic body image were more likely to use exercise as an outlet for these negative body-image behaviors or feelings.

Some women with poor self-image used exercise to excess and characteristically had a higher incidence of eating disorders. These same women typically had mood swings, difficulty communicating effectively with other people and wanted to be excessively thin to an extreme. With regular exercise, it is possible to reverse some of these symptoms, and begin to enjoy a healthier life by restoring balance. If you are experiencing any psychological problems, of course it is better to discuss any issues with your doctor. But regular exercise is one way to begin a new and healthier lifestyle and most doctors recommend starting slowly on this type of program for better optimum health.

Men were seen in studies to have embraced exercise for the positive mental health benefits, and researchers noted that the men in studies who exercised ultimately felt calmer, more in focus mentally and were able to sustain higher energy states after vigorous exercising several times a week. This just stands to reason that exercise is a great outlet for men at any age. It can be as easy as a brisk walk in the park.

Old is News Again

Old school is new school when it comes to the basics of working out. Yes, high tech gear and equipment are cool beans, and yes who wouldn’t purchase the whole home gym for a catalog if the lottery winnings would pay for the entire enchilada. There are so many options for home exercise equipment today, with machines that fold down to conserve space and new small equipment tools which can be used while traveling or on vacation. This is great news for anyone in the market to outfit a home gym, or someone who has the money and who does not have a problem spending it on top of the line equipment.

Everyone is not able to buy the latest equipment for a home gym. That is not a problem, because there are several options for how to get around the money issue in terms of kitting out a new home gym. We hate to tell you – but the best kept secret about training at home is that you don’t need fancy gizmos to get great results. Most people buy expensive work out equipment and it goes by way of eventually being an over-priced clothes hanger in the home.

Let’s go back to old school by way of Physics class. Our bodies have approximately 15 pounds of atmospheric pressure forcing down on us at all times as we go about our day on this great earth. Any (and we mean any) exercise that utilizes gravity and resistance will work to exercise our muscles and put us on the road to fitness. Now let’s take a step back to find a practical application for this theory. You lift 10 pound weights or lift a 10 pound kitty litter container with a convenient handle. Do you really believe your muscles know the difference?

On to the next point, most people are not training for a long distance race, they just want to be in shape, not get injured leading reasonable active lives and improve their quality of life by working out regularly to remain fit at every age.

More than ever, the stable basic exercises such as sit ups, push-ups sprints, jumping jacks and basic stretching are enough to maintain body weight and achieve overall fitness goals. Our best advice is to utilize the “equipment” you already have at home, which can be a towel for resistance training or a chair for strengthening dips and push-ups. You can also go outside and enjoy San Antonio by walking or running in the Metropolitan Health District starting at 332 W. Commerce. You’ll pass by the Spanish Governor’s Palace, the River Walk and the San Fernando Cathedral to finish at the Lexington Avenue Bridge. Check the city calendar for local events and happenings in this area all year long.

Biking – More than the newest trend

If you remember being a kid and riding your bike all day, you remember when you never had to worry about your weight. Did it ever occur to you that you were so fit and trim then because you were so darned active? Of course as adults you don’t have those carefree days back again. But it is entirely possible to start biking again safely to maintain an exercise routine and keep fit at any age.

Think of it this way, biking or bicycling is the newest trend. There are bikes in all styles to allow any position for the rider. There are bikes for the serious cyclist and incline or recumbent bikes where you are practically lying down but pedaling for all you are worth is still an option. So your old sports injury is hardly an obstacle with these new bikes.

You’ve seen electric motor bikes on vacay in the islands, and these are available state side if you are so inclined. You can use pedal or electric options for power and can go as far as you want to on a tank of gas or on your own foot power. Some models use batteries which combine the best of both worlds, and act as a bike then turn into a motorized scooter on pressing a special button.

Living in tight quarters will not stop you from buying a folding bike which eases storage issues and concerns. These bikes break down to fold into a suitcase so that you can use it on a trip or anytime you are away from home.

Different gears on newer bikes offer the choice to coast, go fast, go slow or just to take ‘r easy the entire length of the trip. Some bikes even offer new belt systems so that there is no tell-tale grease track that will speckle the back of your new biker’s tee shirt as you pedal across town.

Don’t forget about the accessories – the newer bikes think of everything for you and keep your media must-haves right at your finger-tips. Some have mounts for your cell phone or even hand powered bikes for limited motion or riders with challenges.

And the cities and towns are getting in on the trend by building, expanding and planning more and more bike paths than ever before. A fun bike ride can be had in Brackenridge Park in San Antonio. Start yoru ride at San Fernando Cathedral and ride through St. Mary’s Street past business districts and restaruants to discover all that the Brackenridge Park has to offer. You should remember to lock up your bike at any place you rest, remember, others will love your bike as much as you do if given the chance to take it off your hands. Some transportation stations even offer lockers big enough to store a bike – which means you’ll travel in class and also have peace of mind.
